
Today I went to the Historic Pullman District in Chicago.

In the 19th century George Pullman invented the Pullman train car to provide the level of luxury available in a top hotel. After some success he built a town for his workers with housing, a school, a church, a marketplace with shops, eateries, and more.
After a while employees felt patronized. Then there was a recession. pullman cut wages, but not rent. Trouble brewed. A major labor strike ensued.

It’s interesting how you can find districts like this in almost every older city. I knew about George Pullman, but I never new about the houses he built. Thanks for sharing this bit of history.
