I’m not a fan of American schools adopting Pajama Day, Funny Hat Day, etc. I for enjoying learning or having extra recess but this silliness takes the cake.
Now I’ve learned that a primary school near me will have an Illumination Day. Students in grades K -2 will bring a flashlight to school and all day the classroom lights are off. The kids will do their work by the light of their flashlight sitting under their desk.
It doesn’t have to be January to make a resolution so this month I’m resolving to exercise more and eat better. Posting this will hopefully keep me on target. While I’m not totally eliminating sugar as I should, I will severely cut back on sweets and dessert. I’m going to do weight exercises for my arms. I figure a targeted goal is more doable. Later I’ll target my legs.
Not only will I cut back on sugars, but I’m going to try protein pacing. When I was researching in PubMed, I read some journal articles on effective weight loss and protein pacing. I hope a protein snack midafternoon will help me avoid getting ravenous before dinner.
I have been walking a lot throughout the day, but I realize I need more challenge to stay fit.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you about the education conference I attended. The speakers were excellent and the theme was teaching how to think not what to think. The “Think like a Scientist” session was given by a Northwestern University professor who spent part of his time describing his work developing gene therapies to manage cancer. It’s mind blowing.
I’d say that I returned to my library’s Great Books Discussion. For some reason the library stopped listing this group in their newsletter and website despite the group asking them to do so. Weird. They also won’t let them use their usual room. We discussed a ho hum short story, “In the Garden of Forked Paths,” which came out in the 1940s. The idea of a multitude of choices creating multiple futures was novel then, but it’s impact has diminished IMHO.
For another book club I’m reading Lessons in Chemistry, which I heard was hilarious. I beg to differ.
I’ve discovered the Korean cartoon, Hello Jadoo. It’s hilarious and captures the culture well. I love how the animators depict puppy love and anger. Warning: Third grader Jadoo and her mom have hot tempers. Episodes run 10 – 12 minutes. I prefer the captioned ones to the dubbed.
Today I replaced my trusty, albeit old computer with a new one, another Mac Mini. When the transaction ended, the sales associate asked if I wanted to “stick the computer in my purse.” Hardly, as it wouldn’t fit. I asked for a bag. The sales associate said that they only give them out if the customer asks. “It’s for the environment.” Ok.
Which does Apple think is easier to recycle, the paper bag or the computer?
Evanston’s Wine Goddess offers wine, liqueurs, ciders and non-alcoholic drinks along with snacks like cheese, charcuterie, and popcorn sprinkled with truffle oil. A comfortable space with street parking is a welcoming spot for a date, friends, book clubs or other groups to meet. A glass of wine averages $12 and a cheese board costs $21 so I thought it was a bit pricey, though I admit I haven’t absorbed the shock of our current inflation.
I’m just now realizing that I should have visited a quaint coffee shop here in Florida. A place with some local color. I’ve just been drinking tea and no special teas.
Anyway, if we were having coffee, I’d suggest we’d go out on the balcony we’re we can see the gulf.
I’d recommend you see the Marco Island Historical Museum which has a great photography exhibit of Cuba’s wilderness, some galleries with the history of this area which was first settled by the Calusa people.
For Easter we went to church, had brunch in the condo and later went our to dinner. It was all very nice.
On Tuesday we went to Ave Maria, a planned community revolving around the Catholic Church. When we got there, mass was just starting. It wasn’t our plan, but we stayed. Later we had lunch and drove around. It’s a lot bigger than I expected.
I was disappointed with the Ave Maria church architecture, which looked garish to me. It missed the mark. The mass itself was meaningful and well attended. We later had lunch and drove around to see all the amenities.
I haven’t read as much as I thought I would this week, but I’m still loving Lorna Doone. I’ve been watching season two of The Chosen series. The Chosen has great characters, a vibrant, dynamic vibe, and terrific acting. It’s a great surprise because though we’ve seen the story told well, this delving into the followers story is novel.
I especially like the extra discussions between the creator Dallas Jenkins and the three Biblical experts he consulted. One’s a rabbi, another a Catholic priest and the third is an Evangelical theologian.
